Burford is one of the finest small towns in the Cotswolds — a perfectly preserved medieval wool town descending steeply to the River Windrush, whose wide High Street lined with 15th and 16th century buildings, independent antique shops, galleries and tea rooms has changed remarkably little in 500 years. Though technically a town, Burford has the intimate scale and character of a large village.
Burford's St John the Baptist Church is one of the grandest parish churches in Oxfordshire — rebuilt and enlarged by wool merchants between the 12th and 15th centuries. The font contains graffiti scratched by Leveller prisoners in 1649. The town's excellent Cotswold Wildlife Park (2 miles south) with rhinos, giraffes and lions is one of England's best small zoos.
