Castle Combe is frequently voted the prettiest village in England — a tiny, almost impossibly perfect Wiltshire village of just 347 people tucked into a wooded valley, whose medieval market cross, 15th-century church, weavers' cottages and complete absence of modern intrusion create a scene so perfectly preserved it was used as a filming location for Dr Dolittle (1967), Stardust (2007) and War Horse.
The village's remarkable preservation owes much to having had only a handful of owners who resisted development for centuries. There are no telegraph poles, no yellow lines and virtually no visible evidence of the 21st century. The By Brook flows beneath a medieval bridge at the foot of the village and the 15th-century St Andrew's Church contains one of England's oldest working clocks — faceless, dating from around 1380.
