Cerne Abbas is one of Dorset's most celebrated villages — famous worldwide for the Cerne Abbas Giant, a 55-metre chalk hill figure of a naked man whose origins remain genuinely uncertain. The ruins of a Benedictine Abbey (founded 987 AD) include a beautiful medieval gatehouse, and the Church of St Mary has remarkable wall paintings. The surrounding Dorset AONB offers superb walking in Hardy Country.
The village's medieval and Tudor buildings along Long Street form one of the finest small village centres in Dorset. The Giant's Brewery has been recently established here, producing excellent ales using the Cerne Valley water.
