Chagford is one of the most delightful and independent-spirited small towns on Dartmoor — a medieval stannary town on the eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park with an excellent range of independent shops, restaurants and a cultural life quite disproportionate to its size. Despite a population of just 1,388, it sustains an arts scene, film society and food culture that regularly attracts visitors from Exeter.
The town is the starting point for some of the finest walking in Devon — the high tors, ancient clapper bridges, stone circles and wild ponies of central Dartmoor begin virtually on the doorstep. The celebrated Gidleigh Park hotel (2 Michelin stars at its peak) is 2 miles downstream. The spectacular Teign Gorge and Castle Drogo (NT) are within easy reach.
