Derry (officially Derry/Londonderry) is Northern Ireland's second city — a proud, historic walled city on the banks of the River Foyle that was the UK's first City of Culture in 2013 and has subsequently emerged as one of the most vibrant and welcoming cities in Ireland. With a population of 83,652, it is compact, walkable and extraordinarily rich in history, culture and community spirit.
Derry's most remarkable feature is its complete circuit of 17th-century city walls — the last walled city to be built in Europe (1613–1619) and the only city in Ireland or Britain whose walls remain entirely intact. A walk around the 1.5km circuit of walls, cannons still in place, takes in views over the medieval city, the River Foyle, the Bogside murals and the hills of County Donegal beyond. The Guildhall — Derry's neo-Gothic civic building on the waterfront — is one of the finest Victorian public buildings in Ireland.
The city's most powerful cultural site is the Bogside — the nationalist neighbourhood below the walls where 21 murals, including the internationally famous 'Free Derry Corner' and the haunting Bloody Sunday memorial murals, form one of the most significant open-air art installations in the world. The Museum of Free Derry provides essential context. The Tower Museum, built within the walls, gives an outstanding account of the city's full history from prehistoric times through the Plantation to the present.
House prices average £148,000 — the most affordable of any city in the UK, making Derry extraordinary value. City of Derry Airport offers flights to several UK cities. The dramatic landscapes of County Donegal begin just across the border, 5 miles west.
