Ellesmere Port is a substantial industrial town on the Wirral Peninsula in Cheshire, sitting where the Manchester Ship Canal meets the River Mersey. Built almost entirely in the 19th and 20th centuries around its docks, canal basin and chemical industry, the town has reinvented itself in recent decades as a major retail and leisure destination while retaining a genuine working-class character distinct from the more affluent Cheshire towns nearby. With a population of 61,023, it is one of the larger settlements in Cheshire West and Chester.
The town's most famous attraction is the National Waterways Museum, housed in the historic dock complex where the Manchester Ship Canal meets the Shropshire Union Canal — one of the finest collections of historic canal boats and waterways heritage in Britain. Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, on the edge of town, is one of the largest outlet shopping centres in Europe and draws visitors from across the North West.
Ellesmere Port has excellent motorway connectivity via the M53, linking directly to the Wirral, Liverpool and the wider motorway network, and sits just 8 miles from the historic city of Chester. The town's industrial heritage includes a major oil refinery and chemical works, which together with the docks have long provided significant local employment. House prices average £168,000, making it one of the more affordable parts of Cheshire.
