Portmeirion is one of the most extraordinary and singular places in the British Isles — an Italianate fantasy village on the shores of Tremadog Bay in North Wales, designed over 50 years by the eccentric Welsh architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. The result is a wildly improbable, genuinely delightful collection of colonnades, domes, campaniles and follies in pastel Mediterranean colours, set in semi-tropical gardens against a backdrop of Snowdonian peaks.
Portmeirion was the filming location for the iconic 1960s TV series The Prisoner. Overnight guests have the place to themselves from early evening. The Portmeirion pottery (famous worldwide for its 'Botanic Garden' pattern) is based here. Two narrow-gauge railways — the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland — operate minutes away.
