Warkworth is one of Northumberland's finest villages — a medieval village in a dramatic loop of the River Coquet, dominated by the magnificent Warkworth Castle, seat of the Percy family Earls of Northumberland, whose castle features in Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 1. The medieval Warkworth Hermitage — carved into the cliff face above the river — is one of the most extraordinary historic sites in England, accessible only by boat.
Warkworth Beach, a glorious 2-mile sweep at the mouth of the Coquet, is one of the finest and most uncrowded in Northumberland. The coastal town of Amble (2 miles east) has an excellent harbour with puffins on Coquet Island offshore.
