Portrush is Northern Ireland's premier seaside resort — a lively, unpretentious town on the Causeway Coastal Route in County Antrim, blessed with two superb beaches, one of the world's great golf courses and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the British Isles. With a population of 6,798, it is small but extraordinarily well-visited, drawing tourists from across Ireland, Britain and the world to its combination of beaches, golf, craic and the stunning Antrim coast.
Royal Portrush Golf Club is one of the great links courses of the world — the only course outside Great Britain to have hosted The Open Championship (1951 and 2019, when Shane Lowry won before a roaring home crowd of 237,750 spectators). The course's dramatic clifftop setting, with views to the Giant's Causeway, Rathlin Island and Scotland on a clear day, is among the finest of any course in the world.
Portrush's East Strand and West Strand beaches are two of the finest in Northern Ireland — long, clean and backed by dunes and the promenade. The town's amusement arcades, fish and chip shops and general seaside energy give it a cheerful, democratic character in contrast to its world-class golf credentials. The Dunluce Castle ruins — a dramatic clifftop medieval castle 3 miles west — are one of the most photographed buildings in Ireland.
The Giant's Causeway — Northern Ireland's only UNESCO World Heritage Site — is just 8 miles east along the coastal road. House prices average £198,000, rising rapidly due to strong demand from Belfast commuters and holiday home buyers.
